Types of Sentences (based on length)

ਸੈਨਟੈਂਸ ਦੀ ਲੰਭਾਈ ਦੇ ਅਧਾਰ ਉੱਤੇ ਸੈਨਟੈਂਸ ਨੂੰ 2 ਮੁੱਖ ਹਿੱਸਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੰਡਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ: Major ਅਤੇ Minor Sentences.

Major Sentences / Regular Sentences 

ਮੇਜਰ ਸੈਨਟੈਂਸਸ ਨੂੰ ਰੈਗੂਲਰ ਸੈਨਟੈਂਸਸ ਵੀ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਮੇਜਰ ਸੈਨਟੈਂਸ ਅਜਿਹੇ ਸੈਨਟੈਂਸ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਜਿੰਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਘੱਟੋ ਘੱਟ ਇੱਕ ਇੰਡੀਪੈਂਡੈਂਟ ਕਲੌਸ (independent clause) ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸਦਾ ਮਤਲਬ ਇਹ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਸੈਨਟੈਂਸਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਬਜੈਕਟ ਅਤੇ ਪਰੈਡੀਕੇਟ ਲਾਜ਼ਮੀ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ।

ਉਦਾਹਰਣ 

       • It is a beautiful day.
       • Anant is sleeping.
       • Angam is playing.

Minor Sentences / Irregular Sentences

ਮਾਈਨਰ ਸੈਨਟੈਂਸਸ ਨੂੰ ਇਰਰੈਗੁਲਰ ਸੈਨਟੈਂਸਸ (irregular sentences) ਵੀ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਮਾਈਨਰ ਸੈਨਟੈਂਸ ਅਜਿਹੇ ਸੈਨਟੈਂਸ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਜਿੰਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੋਈ ਵੀ ਇੰਡੀਪੈਂਡੈਂਟ ਕਲੌਸ (independent clause) ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ। ਇਸਦਾ ਮਤਲਬ ਇਹ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਬਜੈਕਟ (subject), ਪਰੈਡੀਕੇਟ (predicate) ਜਾਂ ਦੋਵੇਂ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਏ ਜਾਂਦੇ। ਇਸਦੇ ਬਾਵਜੂਦ ਇਹ ਸੈਨਟੈਂਸ ਦਾ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।

ਮਾਈਨਰ ਸੈਨਟੈਂਸ ਇਕੱਲੇ ਸ਼ਬਦਾਂ (single words), ਸੈਨਟੈਂਸ ਦੇ ਹਿੱਸਿਆਂ (sentence fragments), ਇੰਟਰਜੈਕਸ਼ਨਸਸ (interjections) ਜਾਂ ਮੁਹਾਵਰੇ/ਕਹਾਵਤਾਂ (idioms/proverbs) ਨਾਲ ਬਣ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਨ।

ਉਦਾਹਰਣ 

     1. Single words

                - "When are you going to Delhi?
                - "Tomorrow."

                - "I feel we should stay out of this matter.
                - "True."

     2. Sentence Fragments

                - "How much will you need to complete this?"
                - "About an hour."

                - "When did you write your first poem?"
                - "When I was in school."

     3. Idioms/Proverbs

                - "How often do you see him?"
                - "Once in a blue moon."

                - "Can I bring my friends?"
                - "Sure. The more the merrier."

     4. Interjections

                - "Oh! That's a beautiful dress." (Primary interjection)
                - "Oh my god! It is Bill Gates!" (Secondary interjection)

     5. Other Expressions

                - “Good morning! It’s a pleasure to see you.?”
                - “Hello! How are you?”
